Buying for a housemate, a colleague or a new partner: three different problems

3 November 2026 · 4 min read

These three get lumped together as the awkward middle of a gift list, somewhere between family and acquaintances, and they are treated as one problem with one solution: spend about 25 dollars and hope. They are actually three different problems with three different failure modes. A housemate gift can annoy somebody daily. A colleague gift gets opened in front of a room. A new partner gift can say more than you meant to say in October. The amount of money is the least important variable in all three.

The housemate: you have to live with it too

A housemate gift lands in a shared space, which means it is partly a gift to yourself and partly a decision about the flat. That is the risk. An object that goes in a communal room is something everybody has to look at, and something with a strong joke in it gets less funny every week.

The safe move is a gift for their own room, or a gift with a job in a shared one. Things with jobs survive because they stop being decoration: somewhere for a hot mug, a second light source, a surface protector. A cast web coaster in a shared kitchen is useful to everybody and mildly theirs.

Avoid anything that takes up communal surface area without doing anything, and avoid scent entirely. Candles and incense in a shared flat are a conversation to have, not a present to spring.

The colleague: it will be opened in public

Assume an audience, because there usually is one. That rules out everything about the person's body: no clothing sizes, no scent, no skincare, nothing that implies an opinion about how they look. It is the commonest work gift mistake and there is no recovering from it in a room full of people.

It also rules out anything whose entire content is a joke. A punchline held up for eight seconds becomes an object somebody carries home, and then keeps out of politeness. The test is whether the gift would still make sense silently.

What works is desk scale and usable. A skull that takes glasses across the brow and keys in the jaw is the only thing in our desk section that solves an actual problem rather than decorating one, and it reads from across a room, which matters when the unwrapping is a spectator event.

The new partner: the risk is overshooting

Four months in, the gift is a statement whether you want it to be or not. Too expensive reads as pressure. Too personal reads as a claim. Anything for the home reads as a plan. None of those are disasters, but they are all louder than most people intend in a first December.

The calibration that works is something specific rather than something large. A gift that proves you were listening costs less and says more than one that proves you spent money. If they mentioned a thing once, buy that.

Objects are the safest register here for the same reason they are elsewhere: no size, no body, no verdict on how they dress. A half hour glass in wood, brass and glass is pleasant, specific and carries no message about the relationship at all, which at four months is the message you want.

What all three have in common

No sizes. In every one of these relationships you may be wrong about a size, and in all three a wrong size cannot be mentioned without embarrassment. That is before you reach a shop like ours, which does not take a garment back because the size was chosen wrongly.

No scent. Perfume, candles and incense are all strong opinions about a person's environment or their body, and all three relationships are too new or too shared to carry that.

No slogans. Text on an object is a sentence doing the work the object should do. It is funny once, it dates fast, and the recipient owns it for years.

Where the price should sit in each case

A housemate is roughly 15 to 30 dollars, because the point is goodwill in a shared space rather than generosity. Over about 40 it starts to feel like a different kind of gesture.

A colleague is whatever the office agreed, and the thing to avoid is going over it. Exceeding a set Secret Santa budget puts the next person under an obligation nobody asked for, and it is noticed.

A new partner is the one where people most often overspend. Under about 50 dollars, bought specifically, almost always lands better than twice that bought generically. The amount is not what is being read.

If you are buying for all three at once

Buy them in one order. Shipping here is a flat 9.95 dollars per order and free over 85, charged once even when the order arrives as more than one parcel, so three gifts in one basket is the cheapest version of this by a long way.

Expect more than one parcel, though. Printed goods are made to order in the United States and objects come from a supplier overseas, so a mixed basket arrives in two shipments on two dates. If each gift has to be handed over separately that is fine, and if they all have to land on the same day it is a reason to pick one route.

Objects take 10 to 18 business days and stop being sold on 24 November; printed items take 2 to 5 business days to produce plus transit and stop on 15 December. For an office party in mid December, the printed route is the only one still open.

A set of five blank cards is a useful thing to have in the same order, because all three of these gifts are improved by a sentence and none of them are improved by a printed greeting written by somebody else.

Questions people actually ask

What should I buy a housemate for Christmas?
Something for their own room, or something with a job in a shared one, at roughly 15 to 30 dollars. Avoid anything scented and anything that takes up communal surface space without being useful.
What is a safe gift for a colleague?
Something desk sized and usable that reads well from across a room. Avoid anything about their body, including sizes, scent and skincare, and avoid anything whose only content is a joke, because it will be opened in public.
How much should I spend on a new partner at Christmas?
Less than you think, and more specifically. Under about 50 dollars bought because you listened lands better than twice that bought generically. Expense reads as pressure early on; specificity does not.
Should I buy clothes for any of these three?
No. All three relationships are ones where a wrong size cannot be raised comfortably, and many shops including ours will not take a garment back for a size chosen wrongly. Objects have no size.
